Travel Safety Tips

There are many things you can do to ensure you have a pleasant experience while traveling. If you are traveling to a foreign country and, it is important to at least be familiar with the language particularly to communicate an emergency. There are other tips ATXPI recommends for your safety while traveling.

1. Avoid Public Wi-Fi.
   Criminals are very inept at hacking devices using public unsecured Wi-Fi. They can retrieve your passwords and account information in only a few moments without you even knowing. ATXPI recommends you turn off your Wi-Fi and use mobile tethering or a hotspot to connect to the internet. If you aren’t sure how to do this, talk with your cell phone provider.

2. Password Protect All Electronic Devices.
   Every electronic device you own should have a strong password that is random and unrelated to your name, date of birth or other personal information. There are also ways to send a code to your cell phone when logging into your email. You can deny access if you do not know who is trying to sign in. You can also receive email alerts when your device connects to an unknown source.

3. Avoid or Minimize Social Media Posts During Travel.
   While it is fun to share your location and photos of your vacation or other activities, ATXPI suggests you wait until you return from your trip to make posts. These types of posts can alert Criminals you are not home and there are many paid background sources that list your address and other information.

4. Monitor Your Debit/Credit Card Activity.
   Check your credit card activity daily to identify and report any unknown charges quickly. You may also consider using Travelers Checks when traveling out of the Country.

5. Purchase Travelers Insurance.
   It is very helpful to purchase travelers’ insurance, particularly when out of the Country. This insurance can cover medical costs, lost luggage, and other items. Make sure to read the policy carefully so you understand what is and is not covered.
