Even Respected People Can be Child Sex Predators

Research has shown that child sexual predators assault between 50 and 150 children before they are ever caught the first time. There have been many studies regarding the backgrounds, behaviors and patterns of child sexual predators. There are many law enforcement profilers that can provide Investigators with points to look for when attempting to identify a child sexual predator; however, it is only a tool and is not foolproof. There are also specialized techniques that are available to assist with interviews of child sexual predators.

Sexual predators are a part of every socio-economic group, every race, every religion, and every profession. There are people who are in positions of authority such as police officers, firefighters, teachers, and clergy members. Many sexual predators will select positions in which they work with children on a regular basis. They can be very personable and charismatic and they often begin their grooming process with the parents and caregivers of their targeted child. While there are different opinions on "grooming techniques", these techniques are often used to make a child comfortable and even feel obligated to comply with abuse. Child sexual predators also obtain information or inappropriate photos to use to threaten their targets in order to make them comply.

While the majority of child sexual offenders are noted to be adult men, there are two groups of child sexual predators that often go unnoticed and are not reported. These groups are female child sexual offenders and juvenile child sexual offenders. These two types of child sexual offenders can blend very easily and offend repeatedly without detection.

It is often hard for people who develop suspicions about others in positions of authority to speak about their concerns. Some of the reasons are fear of making a false allegation, "ruining" someone's career or being ridiculed and shunned by the community. There have also been organizations that have hidden allegations and simply moved the accused persons from one position, daycare, department, church or school to another.

It is very important to remember; red flags start out as pink flags and a "gut" feeling that is almost never wrong. These feelings are instinctive and important to acknowledge regardless of a person's position, income, race, age, or gender. It would be better to make a mistake in an allegation than to allow a child sexual predator to continue abusing children!
